Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach Iceland: Everything You Need to Know
Planning on visiting Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach in south Iceland? Here’s everything you need to know before you visit the most beautiful, yet the most dangerous beach in the country.
There are plenty of black sand beaches in Iceland, but this is easily one of the most impressive. However, it’s also the most well-known, the most easily accessible and, arguably, the most dangerous as well.
If you’re planning on visiting the south coast of Iceland, you’re probably considering visiting Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. This stunning spot is one of my favourite beaches in Iceland.
The first time I visited, I literally just stood there for hours captivated by the waves and the serenity of the beach. I’ve visited several times since then and every time it blows me away with its natural beauty.
However, unlike many other beaches in Europe, there are several things you’ll need to know before you go to Reynisfjara. I’m going to spill all the beans in this article.

Why should you visit Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach?
Quite frankly, it’s one of the most beautiful places to visit in Iceland. Reynisfjara is unlike any of the beaches I’d been to in the world.
Of course, it’s hardly a place to go sunbathing and you definitely won’t find any sunbeds here. It’s not that kind of beach. But you can still spend hours here exploring and soaking it all in.
As well as the black sand, you can also see caves, huge towering basalt columns, and rock formations out to sea. You can climb on rocks for stunning views, see wild sea birds nesting in the cliff tops, and, if you’re very lucky, even see whales.
We saw a couple of whales the last time we visited the beach and it was insane. So, there are lots of reasons to visit Reynisfjara besides just exploring the sandy shores.
Where is Reynisfjara Beach?
Reynisfjara black sand beach is located along the southern coast of Iceland. It’s located a 13-minute drive from the centre of Vik, Iceland’s most popular southerly town and a 2.5-hour drive from Reykjavik. If you’re driving from Reykjavik to Vik, it’s the perfect stop.
It’s also one of the most popular stops on a day tour of the south coast.
The easiest ways to get there are either with a hire car or with a guided tour. We’ve done both during our trips to Iceland and each way is a good option.
How you visit really depends on how much time you have in Iceland, and where you’re staying. If you’re staying in Vik or along the south coast, it makes the most sense to visit yourself.
However, if you’re basing yourself in Reykjavik, I recommend going on a guided day tour because it’s much easier to organise and you don’t have to worry about the long drive or potentially dodgy Icelandic weather.

What to expect from Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach?
First of all, depending on what time of day you visit, expect it to be busy. As I mentioned, Reynisfjara is one of the most popular places to visit along the southern coast of Iceland, so it usually has a lot of visitors, especially in the summer months.
The sands can get quite crowded and the car park can also end up packed with tour buses and tour groups. This is especially true if you visit in the middle of the day.
However, if you time your visit early in the morning or later in the evening, you’ll likely find the beach much quieter. I don’t recommend visiting Reynisfjara at night time because of the potentially deadly sneaker waves.

Sneaker waves
One of the reasons Reynisfjara black sand beach is famous is due to the sneaker waves.
These are dangerously large waves that appear quite small. They are very common on this beach and can sneak up on you (hence the name) and knock you off your feet.
Because of the strength of the current and the icy temperature of the water, the waves can pull you back into the sea which has proved fatal. People have lost their lives because of the waves here. And despite this, some tourists are still just plain stupid on this beach.
As such, there are several rules you should always follow when you visit Reynisfjara.
Rules for visiting Reynisjara Black Sand Beach
First of all, never turn your back on the ocean. I’m not kidding when I say that the waves can sneak up on you. If you’re watching the water and a particularly large wave shows up, you’ll have time to run further up the sand.
Secondly, never walk too close to the water, for the same reason as above. The waves are less likely to reach you if you’re further away.
Thirdly, there’s a warning sign just before you get onto the beach that tells you the current risk from the ocean. This can be either red, amber, or green.
Please follow this warning.
It shows you exactly where it’s safe to explore and where you shouldn’t go due to the very real possibility of being swept into the sea. I’ve seen the sneaker waves here and they really can travel very far up the beach in a short space of time.
However, if you follow all of the rules I mentioned above and respect the ocean, you can have a wonderful time at this beach. You just need to be sensible and not take the waves for granted.
Facilities at Reynisfjara
Because it’s quite a popular place to visit in south Iceland, there are some facilities at the beach. You’ll find a small restaurant that serves delicious soups, coffees, snacks and cakes. There are also two toilet blocks both inside and outside the cafe.
The parking area here is large, partly to accommodate the tour buses that visit daily. If you’re visiting via a self-drive tour of Iceland, then you’ll need to pay for parking. This costs 1000 ISK per car which is around £5.65 or $7.25.
Do you need a guided tour to visit Reynisfjara Beach?
No, you don’t need a guided tour to visit Reynisfjara. It’s a very easy spot to add to a south-coast Iceland itinerary. Considering it’s around halfway along the south coast, it also makes an ideal stop on a road trip around the Ring Road.
However, if you’re staying in Reykjavik, it’s usually much easier to visit Reynisfjara via a guided tour. These are very common throughout Iceland and will also take you to many of the waterfalls along the south coast.
You can also book a southern coast tour which will include both Reynisfjara black beach and a glacier hike.
This is how we visited the first time and, not only is this a great way to visit this beautiful spot, but you’ll also be able to tick one of the best things to do in Iceland off your bucket list. To this day, this glacier hike remains one of the best things we’ve ever done in Iceland.

Overall, if you’re already hiring a car, you don’t need a tour to see this beach. It’s easy to visit on your own. But if you’re staying in the capital, taking a day tour is much easier than trying to get here via public transport.

What is the best time to visit Reynisfjara Beach?
In terms of the time of year, Reynisfjara is open all year round. We visited both in March and in December and both times the beach was beautiful.
It was definitely more crowded in March. However, our visit in December was in 2021, so there were still a lot of restrictions to enter Iceland due to the pandemic, which probably was part of the reason it was so empty!
In terms of the weather, it was dry during both of our visits, the waves were a lot more choppy during our December trip.
In the summer months, the beach can get really crowded due to the influx of tourism during the peak season. But, you’ll also get the most reliable weather during this time.
In my opinion, if you’re after smaller crowds, good weather, and less stormy seas, visit in either September or May. However, you can visit all year round and still have a great time.
How long do you need at Reynisfjara Beach?
This depends on how into nature and scenery you are.
On our first visit, we were part of a guided tour. One of the things I liked most about this tour was that they gave us plenty of time at each stop. We had an hour to explore the beach which I thought was perfect.
When we visited ourselves on a self-drive tour, we also spent another hour here. But we also ate our picnic lunch and spent some time watching some whales we saw in the distance.
You may want to spend more time here if you’re a photographer or if you’re really into wildlife spotting. You may also need less time if the weather warnings are bad and you can’t go far onto the beach.
All in all, I recommend allowing around an hour.

Is visiting Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach worth it?
Yes! 100% yes! This is one of my favourite places to visit in Iceland and both times we’ve been here, we’ve had the best time and absolutely loved the beach.
It’s such a beautiful place, whether you like nature or not. It’s also a haven for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys unique scenery.
So, as long as you’re sensible, stay safe, and respect the ocean, this beach is one of the most wonderful places to visit in Iceland.
