Planning a trip to Iceland can be so overwhelming – there’s a lot to see and it’s all pretty spread out! On our first road trip, we missed so much because we didn’t know it was there!

This is the perfect road trip route for first-time Iceland travellers who want to see the iconic sights around the country but also go off the-beaten track. It’s suitable for couples and families with older children.

Iceland is a notoriously expensive country but we’ve tried to find hotels that are mid-range. However, if you’re looking to travel on a shoestring budget, this isn’t the itinerary for you.

Yes, this itinerary is written as a road trip and you will need a hire car. Iceland doesn’t have a lot of public transport outside of the cities and the easiest way to get around is by hiring a car. Most of the stops on this itinerary are off the ring road and you will not need a 4×4.

There are several optional hikes included in this itinerary but nothing particularly taxing and, since these are options, we’ve included other activities if you’d prefer not to do these. Overall, the itinerary is easy.

This itinerary can be done from April until October. However, if you like hiking, it’s best done from June until September to ensure good weather and enough daylight.

Yes, it is, however, please be mindful of the amount of paper you use. We always try to ensure sustainability where possible.
