This is where we stayed: Clarion Hotel Admiral

Where to Stay for 1 Day in Begen

If you only have 1 day in Bergen, you’ll want to stay somewhere close to the city centre and within walking distance of many of the top attractions.

We recommend Clarion Hotel Admiral – this was where we spent our 5 days in Bergen, and we had the absolute best stay.

View from a hotel room with red sofas, a small round table, and open balcony doors showing a colourful town and green hills.

The hotel is located right on the waterfront, so you’ll have the best view of Bryggen every morning when you wake up.

The buffet breakfast is absolutely delicious, they offer free tea and coffee in the lobby area, provide umbrella hire (because, let’s face it, Bergen can be very wet), and give you discounts on parking – perfect if you’re doing a Norwegian road trip!

We loved our stay here, it was super comfortable and we’d definitely stay here again!

Morning:

For your morning in Bergen, head out on one of the absolute best things to do in the city, then head back to the harbour for a delicious lunch.

10:30 – Fjord Cruise

You can’t visit Bergen and not see the fjords. We stand by this as Bergen isn’t known as the gateway to the fjords for nothing!

Scenic view of a large mountain behind a calm lake with a few houses and trees along the shoreline.

If you only have 1 day in Bergen, we recommend starting with a fjord cruise. It’s such a beautiful way to see the city and the surrounding mountains, and the boat will take you to one of the most picturesque fjords close to Bergen.

Our fjord cruise during 1 day in Bergen

Since you only have 1 day in Bergen, we recommend taking the fjord cruise to Mostraumen. This is what we did, and the half-day tour took us to some of the most beautiful landscapes.

There are multiple departures, but we suggest getting the first one of the day, which leaves from Bergen harbour at 10:30am. This will get you back to the city from 13:30 and give you plenty of time to explore in the afternoon.

⛴️ You’ll need to book a fjord tour in advance as they can sell out, especially in the summer months.

14:00 – Lunch at the Fish Market

After the cruise, we head straight to the Bergen Fish Market.

Norway is known for its seafood, and this is one of the most popular spots to eat in Bergen. It’s also one of the busiest spots and will likely be bustling with tourists no matter what time of day you go.

You can wander through the stalls, sampling the fresh seafood and just taking in the atmosphere.

We always recommend trying a bowl of fish soup; it’s hearty, warming, and perfect after a chilly morning on the fjord. Alternatively, the fish and chips are fantastic!

Afternoon:

In the afternoon, it’s time to explore Bergen city centre. The city is colourful and beautiful with a fab mix of history and scenic sights.

Although you won’t be able to see all of the amazing things to do in Bergen, you’ll definitely be able to cover the best bits!

15:00 – Explore Bryggen

Bryggen is the most popular attraction in Bergen city centre and a must-see on any Bergen itinerary.

The colourful buildings lined up along the waterfront look like they’ve been plucked right out of a fairytale – in fact, they were actually the inspiration for Disney’s Frozen!

Walking through this area literally feels like stepping back in time. The buildings are gorgeous and the narrow alleyways, cobbled streets and wooden beams make this UNESCO World Heritage site one of our favourite spots in Bergen.

As well as admiring the buildings from the outside, be sure to walk between the buildings, admire the beams and pop into a few of the shops. You’ll also find some plaques here explaining the history of the area.

💡TOP TIP: If you’re really interested in the history, you can take a guided walking tour to learn about the Hanseatic merchants and the city’s history

16:00 – Visit Bergenhus Fortress

Next, we recommend visiting Bergenhus Fortress. This is one of Norway’s oldest fortresses and dates back to the 1240s. It once served as a royal residence and has played a huge role in Bergen’s history.

Ancient stone castle wall with narrow arched windows under a partly cloudy sky.

Within the fortress grounds, you’ll find Haakon’s Hall, a medieval banquet hall built by King Håkon Håkonsson, which was once used for royal feasts and weddings.

There’s also Rosenkrantz Tower, a Renaissance-era tower that was part of the city’s defence system.

Historic white stone buildings with dark roofs and a castle tower in the background under cloudy sky.

You can pay to go inside both of these and admire the architecture. Plus, you get great views over Bergen harbour from the top of the tower.

If you don’t fancy paying, you can simply wander around the grounds. It’s free to enter the outdoor areas, and even if you don’t go inside the buildings, it’s still worth a stop to soak up the atmosphere and picture Bergen as it was centuries ago.

17:00 – Admire Bergen’s Cathedral

Just a short walk from Bryggen, you’ll find Bergen Cathedral, a huge stone church that dates back to the 12th century.

Inside Bergen Cathedral

Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt and restored multiple times due to fires and battles, giving it a unique blend of architectural styles.

Inside, you’ll notice beautiful stained-glass windows and a huge organ. It’s one of those places that isn’t crowded with tourists, so you can really take your time.

17:30 – Take the Funicular up Mount Floyen

For your final sight of the day, we recommend heading up Mount Floyen. Unlike Ulriken, the funicular for Floyen is within the city centre, so it’s much easier to get to.

The views from the top of the Floyen Funicular

The Fløibanen Funicular will take you from the city centre up to the top of Mount Fløyen in just a few minutes. From the viewing platform, you’ll get panoramic views over Bergen’s colourful rooftops, the fjords, and the surrounding mountains.

However, we’d recommend spending a little extra time up here. There’s a lot more at the top of Mount Floyen than just the viewing platform, something we originally didn’t realise.

A person walking along a winding forest path surrounded by tall green trees and misty weather.

There are walking trails that lead into the forest, a café where you can warm up with hot chocolate, and even a small playground if you’re visiting with kids.

You could also hike down the mountain rather than taking the funicular back, if you want some more incredible views – but if you’re short on time, the return ride is quick and easy.

❤️ Buy tickets for the Floyen Funicular here.

TOP TIP: Check sunset times before heading up. Bergen can have some truly magical sunsets, and watching it from the top of the mountain is one of the most magical experiences in Bergen.

19:00 – Grab dinner at Porto13

After a day of sightseeing, we recommend heading to Porto13 for dinner. This lovely Italian restaurant serves a delicious mix of pasta and pizza, and it’s very reasonably priced for Norway.

Seafood pasta with mussels, garnished with herbs and a lemon wedge on a dark plate.

Plus, you’ll be close to the waterfront, so you could go for a relaxing stroll through the harbour after your meal.

Is One Day in Bergen worth it?

Absolutely! While you can easily spend a lot more time in Bergen – we spent 5 days here and could have stayed longer – a single day is enough time to capture the essence of the city and see some of the surrounding fjords.

One of the things we loved most about Bergen was how compact and walkable it is. Even with just 24 hours in Bergen, you can fit in a fjord cruise, explore a centuries-old fortress, stroll the waterfront, and enjoy some of Norway’s freshest seafood.

The city really does lend itself to short stays, whether you’re here on a cruise stop, a weekend break, or passing through on a larger Norway itinerary. (If you’re planning on visiting more of Norway, check out our guide to Stavanger).

That being said, if you do have more time, we highly recommend extending your trip. Bergen is a fantastic base for fjord day trips, mountain hikes, and exploring the stunning nature that surrounds the city.

It’s one of the most beautiful places in Norway, and we hope this itinerary will give you a taste of what makes Bergen one of Norway’s most charming cities.
