If you’re travelling to the south of Iceland, you’re probably going to visit the village of Vik at some point during your trip.
Outside of Reykjavik, it’s probably the most well-known town in Iceland, not to mention it’s the perfect place to base yourself for exploring the south coast.
There is so much to see along the south. While many people will explore this part of the country as a day trip from Reykjavik, we highly recommend spending longer here.
Not only are there hidden waterfalls and secret lagoons along the coast, but you can also explore some wonderful hiking trails, see an abandoned plane wreck, and even visit a cave that looks like a Star Wars character!
So, if you’re looking for the perfect place to base yourself in the south, you can’t go wrong with Vik. It’s central, you’ll find everything you need in the town for the perfect stay, and there are some truly fantastic places to stay in Vik.

1. Black Beach Suites
Perfect for: A stylish, self-catering stay, just outside Vik.
Budget: £££
If you want somewhere that you can get comfortable for multiple days, you can’t go wrong with Black Beach Suites. These individual studio-style cabins are very stylish and modern, with a comfortable sofa, small kitchenette, table and chairs for dining in the evenings, and a coffee maker.
The bedrooms, which are connected to the main living space, are very comfortable with a large, soft bed, wood panelling and stylish lighting. You’ll also find a very nice bathroom, with a light-up mirror, a modern shower, and premium toiletries.
Since they’re called Black Beach Suites, you’d be right to assume they’re located near the famous Reynisfjara black beach in Iceland.
They’re situated in a perfect location between Vik and the beach, a 9-minute drive from the centre of Vik and 5 minutes from the beach. It’s the perfect convenient stop on a Reykjavik to Vik road trip.
Many of the rooms also have views over the ocean.
There’s no restaurant on-site, so you’ll have to make full use of the self-catering facilities. However, with a supermarket just down the road, this couldn’t be easier.
2. Hotel Kria
Perfect for: An affordable luxury hotel.
Budget: ££
A fairly new hotel, having only opened in 2018, Hotel Kria is a fab choice. Located right next to one of my favourite coffee shops in Iceland, Skool Beans Cafe, the rooms are fairly simplistic but very comfortable with large wooden beds, armchairs, a coffee-making station, and an en-suite bathroom.
One of the best things about this hotel is the location. It’s towards the edge of the town, so you don’t really get a busy town centre feel. The view of the mountains behind the hotel is also pretty impressive.
You’ll find everything you need nearby, including a petrol station, supermarket, and plenty of restaurants for your evening meal. Plus, there’s lots of entertainment in the hotel as well, such as a dartboard and a pool table.
You’ll find an on-site restaurant that serves a buffet breakfast as well as dinner options, and a cocktail bar for the evenings. You can also book tours from this hotel and we highly recommend a hike on the nearby Solheimjokull Glacier.
3. Vik Apartments
Perfect for: A luxury, self-catering stay.
Budget: ££££
If you’re looking for a luxury stay in Vik, you can’t go wrong with these apartments. They’re definitely one of the priciest places to stay on this list; however, you just can’t beat them for convenience and design.
The apartments are located right in the centre of the village, so you couldn’t ask for a better location. It’s just 300 metres from the beach and you’ll have the famous Skogafoss waterfall less than an hour away.
Vik Apartments are also super stylish and modern, with an open-plan kitchenette, comfy seating area, and cosy bedrooms with large beds. The apartments can sleep up to 6 people, so it’s ideal if you’re travelling to Iceland in a group.
There’s also a restaurant on site where you can go for dinner and lunch, along with plenty of restaurants nearby in Vik itself (such as this delicious burger joint).
4. Hotel Katla by Keahotels
Perfect for: A modern stay with a sauna.
Budget: £££
If you’re wondering where to stay in Vik, you may even have already heard of this hotel. As one of the most popular hotels in the southern town, it’s got a good reputation.
Very nicely designed, you’ll find spacious rooms, comfy armchairs, full-length mirrors, and modern light effects. The rooms are a step up from some of the more basic offerings in Vik. But, this is also evident in the price as it’s not the cheapest by far!
Downstairs, you’ll find a cosy restaurant serving breakfast and dinner. There’s also a communal hot tub outside and a sauna for relaxing in the evenings.
It’s not located in the centre of Vik itself, but, since it’s only 5 minutes down the road, the location is pretty perfect.
5. Hotel Dyrholaey
Perfect for: Stylish affordable luxury, just outside Vik
Budget: ££
For a modern hotel with everything you need for a comfortable stay, you can’t go wrong with Hotel Dyrholaey. It’s located just a 12-minute drive from the centre of the town, but the hotel overlooks the Dyrholaey Peninsula, so you can’t fault the location.
It’s very well designed with spacious, comfy rooms, with spectacular views. The reception is pretty impressive with an authentic Icelandic design and a small shop where you can purchase knitwear.
The facilities of this hotel are also excellent.
There’s an on-site gym with lots of different weight machines, a restaurant that serves delicious Icelandic cuisine, and a bar for cocktails in the evenings. There’s also a laundry service, ideal for those who prefer to pack light.
Plus, due to its location, if you visit in the right season, you might even be able to see the Northern Lights!
6. Hotel Vik i Myrdal
Perfect for: A group or family staying in a hotel.
Budget: £££
Easily one of the best hotels in Vik, this is the accommodation that almost everyone will look at when planning a trip to southern Iceland. The fancy buildings with the glass walls are an instant draw, plus the fact that the town is in the name!
You’ll definitely not be disappointed if you book a room here. The rooms are large and stylish with plush beds, TVs, and cosy seating areas. There are also great views out the windows, and the mountains behind the hotel make for a pretty dramatic backdrop.
You’ll find several room options including a standard double room, a triple room that sleeps up to 3 people, and a family room which sleeps up to 4 people on two levels. This is perfect for families or groups that want their own space, but still want to stay together.
In the communal areas, there’s a beautiful restaurant that serves delicious food, a buffet breakfast, an on-site gym, and a stylish bar with very cool lighting.
7. The Barn
Perfect for: Budget backpackers.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Vik if you’re the ultimate budget traveller, the answer would be The Barn. This stylish hostel is ideal for those looking for an affordable stay.
It’s very nicely designed, especially for a hostel, with a beautiful lobby and communal area with plush sofas, elaborate mirrors, and dangling ceiling lights. There’s also a stylish bar with black tiles and comfy stools.
You’ll find a range of sleeping options here.
You can either go for a bed in a mixed dormitory, a double room with a shared bathroom, or a double room with a private bathroom. Both of the private bathroom options pretty much double the price you can expect to pay, so bear this in mind.
For the shared bathroom option and the dorm rooms, you’ll find a set of communal showers with individual cubicles. There are also shared kitchen facilities, which will help save money on food.
8. Farmhouse Lodge
Perfect for: An affordable guesthouse, just outside Vik.
Budget: ££
Admittedly, this guesthouse is the furthest property from Vik on this list. However, it’s also one of the most affordable and, if money is a big factor for you, it’ll be worth it.
It’s only a 14-minute drive from the town, and also puts you a little bit closer to the waterfalls along the south coast – so it’s a win-win!
The rooms here are simple and comfortable with large double beds, comfy armchairs, wooden bedside tables, and a modern en-suite bathroom.
The views outside the hotel are pretty stunning, with mountains in the distance and rolling countryside outside the windows.
It almost gives hotel/hostel vibes as there is a shared lounge and shared kitchen facilities here, so you can whip up your own lunch or dinner. There’s also a buffet breakfast available in the morning.
Plus, you can enjoy a game of table tennis and darts for evening entertainment.

There are just so many wonderful sights along the south coast, from hidden gems, to several wonderful hiking trails.
Of all the places to base yourself along the south, Vik is probably the top choice. There are a lot of great attractions around the town itself; even if you’re on a south coast road trip, this is a wonderful place to stop for a few days.
Overall, if you’re after a luxury stay, we’d opt for Vik Apartments, if you want a mid-range stay, we’d go for Black Beach Suites, and for a budget stay, we’d go for Farmhouse Lodge.
