Are you looking for the best hotels in Stavanger, Norway? If you’re wondering where to stay in Stavanger, here are our 12 favourite places.

We absolutely love Stavanger. It’s easily one of our favourite places to visit in Norway, not just for the beautiful city but also for the stunning nature surrounding it. 

While many people only stay a weekend in Stavanger, I highly recommend spending at least 3 days in the city. There’s much more to Stavanger than just the famous hikes, and we absolutely loved our time here. 

So, if you’re planning on spending some time in Stavanger, here are the 12 best places to stay, whether you’re looking for a luxury hotel or a cosy apartment.

1. Central BnB Stavanger at Bertis

This was where we stayed during our 5 days in Stavanger, and it was perfect. It’s located right in the centre of the city and within walking distance to many of the top attractions. You’ll find a fully-equipped kitchen, a sitting room and several comfortable bedrooms. 

We stayed in a 3-bed as we were a party of 6, but there are also smaller options if you are a smaller group. There were also two bathrooms in the place, which was very nice if you’re a larger group. 

Plus, divided among the 6 of us, it wasn’t too expensive and it had a car parking space outside for our hire car.

2. Thon Hotel Stavanger

If you want to stay in the centre of Stavanger, look at Thon Hotel Stavanger. This modern 4-star hotel prides itself on offering luxurious bedrooms and a wide range of amenities, including a fitness centre, shared lounge, and restaurant.

The hotel is just a 5-minute walk from Stavanger Station, and must-visit attractions like Stavanger Maritime Museum, Stavanger Cathedral, and Øvre Holmegate are nearby. Meanwhile, you’ll also find many shops, cafes, and restaurants in the vicinity. 

Thon Hotel Stavanger offers six types of rooms, all of which feature a stylish interior, private bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi.

3. Stavanger Housing Hotel

If you’re travelling with family or friends and need somewhere budget-friendly to stay, consider booking Stavanger Housing Hotel.

An 8-minute walk from Byparken and 10 minutes away from Stavanger Maritime Museum, this simple yet homely accommodation offers spacious apartments capable of sleeping six people.

Every self-catering apartment features air conditioning, a private bathroom with a shower, a kitchen with an oven and dishwasher, and a seating area. A private entrance and facilities for disabled travellers are also worth noting.

The area around Stavanger Housing Hotel offers several cafes, restaurants, and shops. Stavanger Train Station is also only 270 metres away.

4. Cozee Central Apartments

If you’re a budget backpacker searching for a private apartment in Stavanger, Cozee Central Apartments is ideal.

This cosy one-bedroom apartment sits in the heart of the city, just minutes away from popular attractions like the Stavanger Maritime Museum, Geoparken (one of our favourite things to do in Stavanger), Byparken, and Stavanger waterfront.

It offers fantastic city views and is fully equipped with everything you need to live comfortably in Stavanger. This includes a bed, a living room, a small kitchen, and a bathroom with a shower. 

In the area surrounding Cozee Central Apartments, you’ll find many international restaurants, grocery stores, and the city’s largest shopping centre – Arkaden Torgterrassen.

5. Hotel Victoria

Hotel Victoria, built in the early 1900s, is a beautiful Victorian-style hotel on the Stavanger waterfront, commonly known as Vågen.

As such, this 4-star hotel offers breathtaking views of the waterfront and easy access to its main attractions, like the Stavanger Maritime Museum.

Better yet, Old Stavanger’s stunning wooden houses are only a 10-minute walk away, as is Stavanger Train Station. The Norwegian Petroleum Museum is also only 300 metres away.

Regarding bedrooms, Hotel Victoria features classically decorated rooms with private bathrooms, seating areas, and TVs. The hotel also has a gorgeous cocktail bar with a French-inspired drinks menu.

6. Clarion Collection Hotel Skagen Brygge

Øvre Holmegate, known locally as Fargegata, which means the street of colours, has become one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Stavanger. Clarion Collection Hotel Skagen Brygge is only a 4-minute walk away.

Here, you’ll find the city’s famous vibrant buildings, quaint cafes and restaurants, and boutique shops.

As if that wasn’t enough, this 4-star hotel sits in an excellent waterfront location, offering stunning views of the Vågen Fjord. As a result, many single, double, and deluxe rooms feature sea views.

Rooms also have TVs, desks, and private bathrooms. Breakfast and dinner are served in the on-site restaurant.

7. Radisson Blu Atlantic Hotel

If you’re looking for somewhere luxurious and romantic to stay in Stavanger, book one of the suites at the Radisson Blu Atlantic Hotel.

In typical Radisson fashion, this magnificent hotel features chic bedrooms with luxury amenities, a fitness centre, a sauna, a sun terrace, and a high-end bar and restaurant.

The suites at this Radisson hotel feature enormous beds, seating areas, sparkling ensuite bathrooms with showers and baths, desks, and large windows with city views. Topping things off nicely, a complimentary breakfast is included in your stay.

Regarding location, this 4-star hotel is right next to Byparken and Stavanger Cathedral.

8. Scandic Royal Stavanger

The Scandic Royal Stavanger is one of only a few hotels in central Stavanger with a swimming pool. It also has a hot tub and sauna, where you can relax after a busy day exploring the city.

This hotel in the heart of Stavanger offers single, twin, double, family, king, and queen bedrooms and master suites. Every room has a modern design, Wi-Fi, and a private bathroom with a shower. 

Some rooms also have a bathtub, and the hotel has its own restaurant and bar. Gamle Stavanger, the Norwegian Canning Museum, Central Station, and Byparken are within walking distance.

9. Saga Caves Straen

Gamle Stavanger, also known as Old Stavanger, is a historic area of the city best known for its 18th-century wooden buildings. If you stay in Saga Caves Straen, you’ll be in a prime location to explore this area.

This self-catering apartment is one street from the Old Town and inside a beautiful traditional property. Saga Caves Straen is also only a short walk from famous attractions like Stavanger City Hall, Byparken, and Stavanger Maritime Museum.

Besides its favourable location, this accommodation option has everything you need to enjoy a comfortable stay. This includes a fully-equipped kitchen, Wi-Fi, a private bathroom, and multiple bedrooms.

10. Stay North Paradis

While Stavanger city centre is jam-packed with fascinating architecture, shops, and restaurants, its surroundings offer a more natural experience. Stay at Stay North Paradis to experience these surroundings while still having easy access to the city.

This apartment-style accommodation is only 0.7 miles from Godalen Beach and Godalen Strand and 1.6 miles from Emmaus. The surrounding area has grocery stores and restaurants.

Conveniently, Stay North Paradise is still only a 30-minute walk to the city centre and its main attractions. The apartments here feature a terrace, kitchen, lounge, TV, private bathroom, and washing machine.

11. Best Housing – Klostergaarden 

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Stavanger with plenty of things to do, look no further than Best Housing – Klostergaarden.

The area surrounding this oddly shaped aparthotel in Bergelandgata offers many activities, such as winter sports, tennis, table tennis, and mini-golf.

Its location is excellent for several reasons. Firstly, the centre of Stavanger is only a 5-minute walk. Conversely, the Norwegian Canning Museum, Mosvatnet Lake, and Godalen Beach are within walking distance.

Inside, the apartments at Best Housing have spacious bedrooms, living rooms, private bathrooms, and kitchens. All the apartments here are suitable for two people.

12. RoaldsPiren Stavanger

The 5-star RoaldsPiren Stavanger is the most unique accommodation option in Stavanger. This beautiful boathouse-style property sits on a small dock on the small island of Roaldsøy, approximately 4 miles from the city centre.

Luckily, the island is connected to Stavanger via a number of small bridges, so getting into the city isn’t difficult. Besides, this cabin offers an amazing, unique, and romantic experience. 

The property has steps down to the water, a private sun terrace, a fire pit, a kitchen, a dining area, a private bathroom, and a cosy loft bedroom. What else could you possibly need to relax?

Where to stay in Stavanger: What are the best areas?

There are several wonderful areas to stay in Stavanger, but these are some of the best options for a 3-day stay or longer:

• Stavanger City Centre: Ideal for those who want to explore the city’s main attractions, restaurants, and nightlife on foot.
• Old Stavanger (Gamle Stavanger): A charming, historic neighbourhood with traditional wooden houses and cobblestone streets.
• Storhaug: A quieter residential area, perfect for families and those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere, while still being close to the city centre.
• Sola: Near Stavanger’s airport, Sola is a great option if you want beach access and proximity to hiking trails.

Most of the best hotels in Stavanger are located within the city centre, although you can find plenty of other accommodations on the outskirts of the city.

How do I get around Stavanger if I’m staying outside the city centre?

Stavanger has a reliable public transport system, including buses that connect the suburbs to the city centre. If you’re staying near Sola or Randaberg, public buses run regularly, and taxis or ride-sharing apps are also available.

However, if you’re planning on exploring the surrounding nature, doing some of the hikes near Stavanger, and seeing the fjords, then renting a car is the best option.

This is the easiest way to reach many of the hiking trails, such as Manafossen, Kjerag, Trollpikken and the ever-popular Pulpit Rock hike.

Is it worth spending longer than a day in Stavanger?

Yes, the city is packed with things to do, and there is also so much nature and beautiful opportunities for hiking around the city.

It always surprises me that people only spend one day in Stavanger or even just a weekend, when there is so much to do in the area. We spent 5 days in the city and could’ve easily stayed longer. 

In our opinion, the city is one of the best places to visit in Norway.
